Real Weddings: Wedding With A View
KHOO EKE NERNG and SHERRANE HAY, both 30 and financial planners
WHEN Jan 17, 2009
WHERE The beautiful Khayangan Estate in Bali, a clifftop villa overlooking the ocean. The couple will hold their customary dinner later this year on Oct 3 in Singapore, for family and friends who missed their January island wedding.
COURTSHIP The romance began on an island for this fun-loving couple. The pair first met 11 years ago through a mutual friend at a party in Sentosa.
PROPOSAL The one exception to their “beach-themed” romance was when Eke Nerng proposed on a cold spring day last April. “We were at the Tokyo Tower in Japan when he asked me to marry him. I was taken by surprise and was speechless,” Sherrane recalls.
WEDDING Sherrane tells how they came to decide on a destination wedding. “We wanted it to be a relaxed, intimate, and memorable event. We initially wanted a garden-themed wedding at the Botanic Gardens, or something along those lines, but fi nally decided on Bali. The Khayangan Estate is on a cliff and as such, has an element of the garden theme that we were looking for, as well as a gorgeous view of the sunset. It was indeed a dream wedding come true.”
The couple took just six months and two trips to Bali to get all the details sorted. “Jonathan from Wedding Acts was our wedding planner. As both of us were tied up with work, he really helped us save time, especially since it was a destination wedding. Jonathan put in place a good programme, so we were able to confirm the venue, caterer and other details in just two visits to Bali.”
After the short solemnisation ceremony, with the sea breeze and the sun setting over the estate, the couple’s green-and-white-themed dinner was held under a marquee perched high above Bali.
Recalls Sherrane: “My close friend was the celebrant and emcee for the night. Before dinner, two of our friends did a rendition of Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours for us. It was also a night to remember as our best man and bridesmaid each gave a touching speech that made it really special for us.”
Then, the couple took to the dance floor for their fi rst dance as husband and wife.
Ted Wu, who designed Eke Nerng’s white linen suit and Sherrane’s one-shoulder beaded gown, also helped turn it into a dream wedding for her. “Ted was accommodating and even made last-minute changes to the gown, so that it fi t in better with the theme.”
The groomsmen and bridesmaids all wore green and white outfits.
Sherrane and Eke Nerng’s crew included Lightedpixels photographer Kelvin Koh, and makeup artist Lynnette Seet.
EXTRAS “A wedding planner is essential!” Sherrane explained how Jonathan’s planning laid the groundwork for a bicker-free start for the newlyweds and prevented her from turning into Bridezilla.
